Plastic Bags Are Not Our Friends!
During March and April 2011, WRSE visited several classrooms and YMCA after-school programs in order to spread the word that we all use too many plastic bags and to discuss with the children what we might be able to do instead of taking new bags when we buy things at the store. Theresa Lynn of ReadBoston and Karen Sauer, Peg Sawyer, and Rickie Harvey of WRSE made the visits to the children as a tie-in with West Roxbury Reads 2011 and also for Earth Day.
The adults shared the wonderful book 10 Things I Can Do To Help My World with the students and displayed the shocking bag outfit (created by Karen Sauer) that illustrates the number of plastic bags each American uses in one year. In addition, WRSE brought reusable bags for the children, which they then decorated with environmental themes and then took home.
